I would like to tell you about my latest and possibly greatest achievement on my road to independence. Having wanted a volunteer position for a long time I was recently offered a wonderful position at an Equine Services company.
I have loved horses my whole life so to get this position was not just an incredible role to have won, but also brings back many happy childhood memories.
My first day was 25th March 2013. I was so excited and on arrival I was able to meet with the owner and some of the people who keep their horses there. Of course soon after I got to meet the horses themselves; I gave them a kiss and a cuddle and didn’t want to let them go. But I knew I had to as my first task was to clean their stables.
I got to work and gave it my all. When I was done I felt so proud; seeing how clean and tidy I had made the horses’ living areas gave me a great sense of achievement and I was praised by the other staff for the great job I had done. It really made me feel like I was doing something worthwhile which means a great deal to me.
At first I was worried that it was taking longer for me to muck out the stables than the other people there. But I have received so much encouragement, which has helped me to see that it does not matter if it takes me a bit longer as long as I keep to my very high standards of quality; I recognise that this is my responsibility and the horses rely on me to do the job right.
This has impacted on me in a very positive way, in all aspects of my life. It gives me a great deal of fulfilment to do a job that needs doing, and that is also something I really want to do. I know that at the end of the day every time I take my wellies off, I have helped someone and also helped the horses.
I hope to continue this role and my next goal is to one day have a riding lesson with one of the horses I look after. I will make sure to keep you all posted with my progress!
