We can all be champions

Promoting well-being and positive mental health has always been an essential part of everything ubu does as an organization. This is why we are unwavering in our commitment to ensuring that everyone has easy and direct access to one of our Well-Being Champions.

All of our Team Managers are trained and coached as Champions to recognize the signs of poor mental health in themselves and in the people they work alongside. Ensuring they are always ready to listen to problems, to signpost to professional help and support and ensure the best possible environment for healthy and happy working lives.

World Mental Health Day has been ‘celebrated’ 10th of October for nearly three decades. Of course issues we associate with poor mental health don’t simply disappear on 11th of October. The original intent of this awareness day was to recognise how the state, good and bad, of our mental health affects the way we embrace citizenship in society, living with and sometimes without, a common humanity which stands up to respect individual and cultural differences.

ubu’s Vision is to enable active citizenship by transforming people’s everyday experience so that they can lead healthy and fulfilling lives, enabling them to achieve their goals with minimal support.

The work we do, enabling and supporting some of the most vulnerable and misunderstood members of society, is occasionally extraordinary, sometimes stressful and almost always ‘unseen’ by others. We believe that everyone should be given the opportunity to live with hope, good health and work in ways which always contribute towards helping people gain more inclusive, creative and rewarding lives, whatever their abilities and no matter what their background might be.

These are times of uncertainty, with chaotic and divisive politics, economic and environmental challenges and a world, which at times, seems more obsessed with its social media image than it is with common humanity, respect and kindness which we, in ubu, declare is worth standing up for.

Maintaining the feeling of balance in our behaviour, promoting a tangible experience of happiness in the things we do and ensuring that we care and look out for each other, are, I believe, the most worthy of goals.

By asking a simple question “How are you?” we can make a huge difference to someone’s life. By actively listening when someone is asking for help and responding by signposting to appropriate professional support makes a real difference. By enabling each other with positivity to achieve mental healthiness and find well-being in everything we do, we can all be champions with humanity.
