Today our Christmas festivities began with lots of singing and dancing to some of our favourite Christmas songs led by the people we serve. Our revellers came over to celebrate how far we’ve all come this year in our amazing achievements and experiences which have enabled us to become the people we should be.
Russell from Leeds came on the train and was one of the first people to get up and dance, encouraging the ubu elves and our guests to really get into the spirit of the season. Our visitors formed a conga line and danced around our beautifully decorated Christmas room, so that in the end even the most reluctant of guest had joined in and we were laughing and eyes were twinkling with the pleasure of it all.
Then two waddling penguin elves appeared and a game of feed the hungry penguin was underway. Soft snowballs were sent flying into their bright feeder buckets by two teams of the people we serve. As our two well-fed penguin elves waggled their tails with delight, trays of beautifully decorated cupcakes arrived along with warm refreshments to keep us cheerful on a very chilly afternoon.
People served by ubu in York have nominated St Leonard’s Hospice in the city for a donation of £50 from ubu to support their extraordinary commitment to ensuring that people facing the most difficult time in their lives have every comfort possible. We learned from a video about the hospice that it is celebrating over 30 years of caring for people and ubu is proud to support their work in the community.
We ended our celebration today with some foot-stomping and joyful rounds of singing and dancing. Russell would have stayed for several hours longer if he could have, making it clear that he would like to ‘party on’. As the ubu elves and helpers waved goodbye to our guests, our thoughts began to turn to what tomorrow’s festivities will bring. Come back and see for yourself!
