Roses are red, violets are blue, my heart is filled with love and I’m giving it to you!
But what is the point of giving your heart away if it is not healthy??!!
Here at ubu, we are excited to be celebrating Valentines Day this February BUT even more excited to be championing the British Heart Foundations ‘Heart Month’.
Between February 16 and 27, the BHF is encouraging everybody to show their own heart some love by signing up to their 10 minute challenge programme.
Coronary heart disease is the UK's single biggest killer, responsible for approximately 73,000 deaths every year - about 1 in 6 men and 1 in 10 women. CHD is the term that describes what happens when your heart's blood supply is blocked or interrupted by a build-up of fatty substances in the coronary arteries.
Over time, the walls of your arteries can become furred up with fatty deposits, this process is known as atherosclerosis and the fatty deposits are called atheroma. Atherosclerosis can be caused by lifestyle habits and other conditions, such as: smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure (hypertension) or diabetes.
Like ubu, the BHF know that making even the smallest of changes towards a healthier lifestyle e.g. trying new fruits or taking a walk, there is a chance of beating this disease. They also know, like ubu, that sometimes people need some encouragement.
The BHF ten minute challenge takes the loneliness and hard work out of improving your heart healthy options. Everyone who signs up will get a gentle reminder daily about how they can be healthier in ten minutes.
Each day there is one simple challenge. For example; get off the bus a stop earlier and walk the rest of the way to work. Each challenge takes a maximum of 10 minutes to complete. The BHF hope the challenges will inspire you to get active and eat well. In addition for all those biology geeks, the BHF will share the science behind the challenges. Busy lifestyle – no excuse!
But why stop there, the BHF are encouraging you to inspire your work colleagues and get them involved. You can also download posters and flyers and top tips for organising your challenge.
ubu are dedicated to helping people live better, more fulfilling lives – what better place to start than with your own heart - because without heart, nothing else matters.
We’re encouraging the people we serve and our workforce to take part and to love their hearts!
