My Life in Lockdown

Well where to start. I started with UBU only at the end of February, so I had just finished my induction before lockdown commenced and I was asked to work from home. At the same time schools closed meaning I became a teacher to a 13-year-old boy. I don’t know if you have teenage boys but let me tell you I consider it a success if he washes every day never mind trying to get him to sit for hours a day and do schoolwork. A lot of changes to how I do my job came about, so I had to adapt and be flexible. This on top of the fact I’m not only a mum, work fulltime, a chef, a cleaner, a dog walker, a gardener and now apparently I’m a teacher. I have to admit it was all very overwhelming at first trying to juggle everything on my own and I felt I was failing him as a parent and my colleagues as this was a new job. But I learnt that it’s ok to not be ok and to have these worries and speak up about it. Some tasks we think we can’t talk about as we should be doing them as a parent. But truth be told this it’s not normal, this is all new to everyone and it’s a big change. Everyone has struggles just like me, I am not alone. No one has to be. One thing that I will take from this though is that I have learnt the value of people. Not just people I know everyone. The selfless acts of people in this critical time amazed me.

I moved to UBU from an 18-year career in banking and I can honestly say it’s the best thing I did. I am so proud to work for a company and with people that do what you do. You should all be proud. So from me, my son and my dog Bobby thank you.
