We'd like you to meet Micky.
Micky is an active, outgoing young man from Blackpool. But you wouldn't necessarily have known that had you met him last year.
In the past, Micky spent a fair amount of time in hospital and it was a very difficult period for him. Life outside of hospital was not much better. Because of a poor experience with another support organisation, he was unhappy. The quality and level of support he was receiving meant he often stayed indoors, and in unsuitable conditions. This was not how Micky wanted to live his life.
His guardian, Janette, shared his concerns, and together they looked for a new place and a new team to help him move towards a healthier and happier life. That's when Micky contacted ubu.
Since moving into his new uStep flat in March, he feels that everything has improved for him. And Janette is thrilled with the service provided by the ubu staff.
‘I’m absolutely delighted. The service is amazing. It’s the best Micky has ever had. He is like a different person in just a few months: he is healthier and looks better than he has done in years”.
Change is not always easy. Often it takes us time to settle in to a new home, to a new neighbourhood, and to find new friends. But not for Micky!
With specialist support from his ubu enabling team, Micky’s way of life has been transformed. The ubu team have worked closely with him, listening carefully to Micky, helping him to put his past experiences behind him, and to talk about what he really wants to do in the future.
Micky says he is at last enjoying a home he feels proud of. He works with ubu support to keep his flat clean and tidy, to make sure that he looks and feels good and to start looking for activities and interests in his local community. Janette remembers that “…before coming to live in his new flat Micky never went out or socialised with other people. He looks so well and happy since he moved in here. It’s been a marvellous change for him”.
Micky agrees and says that he feels that at last he has a voice and can make his own decisions and choices. He says that he feels so much happier now and is getting out and about and enjoying his new-found independence and freedom.
Micky says his ubu enablers have helped him to enjoy everything he does and best of all, they genuinely care about him.
“At my last place I just stayed in watching telly. It's great being able to get out and do things. I’ve become so much more active. I’m eating healthy meals and keeping myself fit. I feel better than I ever have done. The staff here are much friendlier. I kind of see them as my extended family.”
Thank you, Micky. And thank you for choosing ubu, and for the opportunity to work with such an amazing young man as yourself. We are all proud to be on your team.
