My name is Darren from Blackpool. I would like to share my recent experiences working to improve my health and well-being. At home, I use a tri-walker to get around and when I am out and about in my local community I’m supported by ubu enablers to get where I want to go in my manual wheelchair.
Because I’m not as physically mobile as I used to be, I realise that getting more and better quality exercise will help to make sure that I keep up my physical health and well-being. One of my goals has been to find regular exercise programme that is suitable, fun and effective. I needed one that would let me take part in a variety of fitness exercises safely whilst also improving my health and well-being.
My ubu support team have helped me to find the best possible weekly exercise programme in my local area. Although there seemed to be limited possibilities available, together we eventually discovered an ideal exercise class perfectly suited to my needs and requirements.
I joined an ‘Easy Exercise Class’ on a weekly basis, at my local Sports Centre. I began with an introductory session where I met the class tutor and who took me through an assessment to identify which fitness equipment I could use independently and safely. Fortunately, most of the exercise equipment available is specifically adapted to meet the needs of people with disabilities. I was excited to try out the fitness equipment and my very favourite has been the exercise bike. My exercise tutor has been very supportive and encouraging and always motivates me to “do as much as I can”. This has really helped me at every session to push myself to do more than I did last time. A record of my progress is kept on my ‘programme of fitness’ which helps me to see how well I do each week and set goals for the future.
Since I started going to the exercise class, my health and well-being has improved and I feel much better and stronger in myself. I find the exercises challenging and rewarding and I have also met some great new friends there. I’m also learning more about healthy eating and diet and how it fits in with my exercise programme. I am well on the way to achieving my health and well-being goal to become much healthier and fitter.
