A Personal Best

The recent successes of British athletes at the Olympic and Para Olympic games in Brazil has inspired many people to think about ways to improve their health and fitness by participating in sports and active leisure pass times within their communities.

ubu serves people with a wide range of abilities and strengths by enabling and encouraging them to led the way in making positive lifestyle changes. They increasingly are choosing to improve their feelings of well-being through a variety of exercise, fitness and healthy eating programmes available in their local communities.

At the beginning of September, Niall who lives with greater independence supported by ubu in the North East, completed the Middlesbrough 10 kilometre run. Niall who has always loved running as a sport, had decided at the beginning of the year that he wanted to work towards running a half marathon. He knew it would take dedication and lots of practice. Niall took part in a specifically designed training programme every Monday with others in his community in the led-up to this first stage of reaching his goal.

The Middlesbrough 10 kilometre run is well known for being a fast, flat course around the city. The event is also renowned for its friendly and supportive atmosphere. Every year, participants are cheered on and encouraged by enthusiastic supporters from the general public. Some of the competitors take part for the fun of it but many, including Niall are wanting to beat their personal best running time over the 10 kilometre distance.

Running is something incredibly enjoyable for Niall, it helps to make him feel healthy and strong. It gives him a tremendous lift whenever he takes part in an organised event like this one. This year he raised £206.20 from sponsorship for his run which is going to a charity, The British Heart Foundation which Niall supports in other ways too. During the week, he works in one of their shops helping out when he’s not busy training.

Niall was proud to complete his run in just over an hour, improving significantly on his previous attempts. All of the hard work and training definitely paid off. His next goal is the complete a half marathon which is nearly 22 kilometres. That’s going to take some serious training to accomplish, but Niall is very much up for the challenge and wants to inspire others to get out there and have some fun while getting fit too!
