Carrie from Middlesbrough has been living independently in a ubu supported flat for the past six years. Her life has been transformed from the very sheltered one she led before she moved in. Carrie had never been to a supermarket, something most of us do only too regularly. She didn’t have some of the life skills most people take for granted and just didn’t feel she could do much for herself.
Since moving into her new home, Carrie has started to take charge of many aspects of her life which seemed impossible before. She has developed skills and learned how to manage her life in a way she never dreamed she could in the past. The quality of her day-to-day living has changed dramatically. Now she is more comfortable about making choices and deciding what direction she wants to take.
Carrie says “I have a boyfriend now who means who the world to me”. She says she is enjoying being part of the community and getting out and about with more independence. These huge changes have come about with the gentle support and encouragement she has received from ubu.
For her 30th birthday, Carrie wanted to mark it with a proper celebration. It was the first time she had organised a party and she invited all her family and friends. Team members from ubu helped Carrie to plan the event, send out invitations and to ensure it all went wonderfully well. Carrie says “I had a ball and have some wonderful memories of my special day”. Finding a voice to express our dreams is important to everyone. For Carrie this was a huge step forward.
