7th Day of ubu Christmas Festivities

9th December 2014

The weather outside was frightful, but inside it was so delightful.

That’s because ubu travelled to the land down under for an awesome, Aussie-themed Christmas party today. One could almost feel the sunshine and warm ocean breeze, as the sounds of cricket bats smashing and the smell of burgers grilling on the barbeque wafted in from the garden. Aussies love a good ‘barbie’, and the merry elves laid out an incredible spread: jeweled veggie rice, roasted sweet potatoes, mini burgers with all the fixings, and endless trays of delicious berry trifle. But the good time didn’t stop at the banquet table. Bruce the Southern-Hemisphere-Snowman and Skippy the Kangaroo kept the guests hopping, as they all sang ‘The Most Wonderful Time of the Year’ and struck fanciful poses in a jungle photo booth.  Everyone danced and sang their cares away, and enjoyed a jolly good break from the cold winter weather.

As ubu celebrated the day, we were reminded of those for whom a short break is but a dream. Leeds Children’s Charity supports disadvantaged children who suffer from poverty, neglect, abuse, learning difficulties, illness, or are themselves young carers. The majority of children come from the most deprived areas of Leeds and the surrounding areas. For many, poverty, an unstable home life or neglect means they’ll never have a childhood holiday to remember. That’s where Leeds Children’s Charity comes in. They support children to visit the seaside, make friends and have fun. They do this by sending 350 children each year, between the ages of 7-11, to their holiday centre in Silverdale, an “area of outstanding natural beauty” on the border of Lancashire and Cumbria. The children are carefully looked after by dedicated staff and a range of indoor and outdoor activities take place such as various sports (including a sports day), arts and crafts, dance and music, bikes, go-karts, walks, swimming, treasure hunts and bowling. The results are evident in the behavioural change of many of the children, which enables them to better cope with difficult situations at home and assists them in their school work and social interaction. ubu is happy to know that the small donation will go far in helping these children enjoy a healthy and happy holiday.

With another exciting day lined up don’t forget to check in and see what’s happening!
