The recent TV programme, Saints and Scoundrels, showed how the support James receives from ubu has truly transformed his life and the life of his family. However that story is now out of date as James has moved his life on further again, just like so many people using ubu’s uStep supports.
James shows us clearly that life doesn’t stand still and as one wise person once said “It is better to Travel Hopefully than to arrive” which is just what he and his fellow uStep consumers are doing. Since the show was filmed last winter he has moved to a place of his own, with a fellow flat mate and he is gaining so much more freedom, within clear boundaries and meaningful life routines.
James and his support team clearly demonstrate how public funding of progressive, developmental purposeful Health and Social Care supports are truly well worthwhile, for both the person who needs constant support and also the tax payers, for whom it represents genuine value for money.
Tax payers, Consumers, their families and their commissioners alike constantly seem to want more and more – yes more outcomes, more independence, more safety and security, and all this for less money. So we are so grateful to people like James and his team who show everyone clear examples of how this is possible, with the determination of not stopping here but continuing to let their life journey be one of travelling and growing hopefully in the real world.
