I have always had a massive love for football. You may have read in the Personally U journals that I am a devout North Shields FC fan.
It used to be that I just watched games on TV, but through support from ubu I soon found myself standing in the terraces, cheering the players on in person.
But things have moved on even further from just supporting my team at matches.
ubu supported me to speak to the club about the possibility of doing voluntary work. The Chairman, Alan Mathews, was very supportive, and said at the end of every game they needed someone to collect the corner flags in, and would I like to do it.
Of course I agreed and said that I would do it at the next game. It was explained to me that because the club runs on a tight budget, everybody pays to get in, but because of my help they would discount my admission to just £1.50; which I was more than happy with!
My hard work soon became apparent to the club and they gave me a new responsibility; preparing the players’ water bottles and taking them on the pitch as and when required. Not only did this task make me feel much more important to the club, but also the first game I performed this task we won 5-0! It must have been my water! Ha ha!
I haven’t stopped there! ubu also supported me to speak to the man in charge of transport for away games and I have since been asked to travel with the players and supporters throughout this season.
One of my favourite parts of match-day is getting there early and chatting with the other supporters over a cup of tea and a pie. They are really nice people and I enjoy getting involved and talking tactics.
So I am now prepared and looking forward to the new season, and we are one of the favourites to win promotion to the Northern Premier League, exciting times I'll let you all know.
