ubu were recently involved in a BBC program when they arranged to film one of the people we serve and his mum, as part of their programme ‘Saints and Scroungers’. This is an investigative show which reveals hard hitting information about the benefit system by highlighting those who genuinely need support, like James, alongside less scrupulous individuals involved in fraudulent claims.
The film crew were so supportive and really thrilled to see and hear about the fantastic outcomes that James is consistently achieving. These include involvement with educational courses, therapeutic work placements and the continual planning and reviewing of personal goals.
James’ involvement in the programme was arranged by his mum Jo who wanted to express the difficulties parents can go through with a family member who has a learning disability. She was keen to show that ubu provide the kind of support James needs; a unique and personalised approach that enables individuals to engage and connect with a way of living that works for themselves, their families and the general public as it provides real tangible value for money.
All of the above is only possible through teamwork. James is supported at various times by a team of 17 people. Not only does this way of working ensure the safety and security of all ubu customers, but it also reflects why families across the country have found great benefits knowing that their loved ones are being supported through ubu’s uStep model to become the people they should be. As Harrogate area manager Ian Jenks says “this is definitely the way forward. We are taking consistent huge steps in providing greater independence in a secure environment”.
Since the filming of this episode James has gained even further independence by moving into one of our uStep apartment services. This enables him to have the benefits of a specially designed and adapted flat of his own that still provides access to his support as and when required, but also gives James the increased freedom to decide how he lives his own life.
