Darlington was abuzz with excitement on Friday 27th September, as ubu opened their latest uStep support service. Though the event itself took place at the newly designed and furnished apartment models, the uStep service goes way beyond four walls. It is about providing opportunities for vulnerable adults to take control of their lives and achieve greater independence.
Darlington’s representative for Adult Social Care, Councillor Veronica Copeland, was one of the many special guests in attendance and generously agreed to cut the ribbon to declare the new service open. Prior to this, Councillor Copeland gave a heartfelt, inspirational speech about the importance of each customer “having their own key and their own front door”. She also thanked ubu for choosing Darlington in which “to build this fantastic opportunity”, and closed by saying “I know what a difference this will make to people’s lives”.
The day was a fabulous celebration, with plenty of friends, food, music and even a magician on hand to provide a great deal of fun and entertainment.
Festivities aside though, it is important to note that this was not just about one great day, but many. The uStep opening signifies a future filled with wonderful achievements and outcomes for each and every individual who moves in. Glen is one such person to be making the transition into the uStep model, and in fact was moving in on the 27th. He told us “I love this place, I’ve been sharing with 2 other people since 1999 so this is a real step forward for me...I will be able to play my music, choose my own furniture and come and go as I please”.
We would like to wish all those making the Darlington uStep support service their home a fantastic future.
