uStep all round support; Caring for the Carers

3rd October 2014

MANY carers worry that as they age or may not be around, their loved ones will be shut away in institutions.  It troubles people right until the inevitable happens.

uStep doesn’t just see the people we serve but looks at the bigger picture through our unique model of care and support. Our innovative model has supported vulnerable adults and children for more than 30 years. It has helped people who never dreamt they could live independently realize their ambition to have a home of their own, at the heart of their local community living more independent lives.

We have shifted the burden from institutions and local authorities and given the people we serve the responsibility of making their own life choices.

An added benefit of this freedom and choice is that the families and carers of those people we serve, have been able to see their loved ones settle into a greater independent lifestyle knowing there is support there if it is needed whilst been comforted that they will never be locked away again.

Our work has seen us support many families and carers, enabling peace of mind, their worries and strain to be taken away.  uStep was developed to care for the individual but from the start has acknowledged that long term care for vulnerable adults and children is a problem that the whole of society must address.

During the party political conference season the emphasis has once more been on cost with sound bites about treating patients as whole people.

uStep does that.  ubu puts the people we serve at the heart of their care and puts them in control.  We ask them what they want to achieve and then help them to do it.  Their families and carers are integral because they want to ensure their loved ones are been cared for, the way they would care for them, whilst wanting to see them grow into greater independence.  It is a learning curve for everyone but ultimately everyone benefits with families and carers having peace of mind knowing their loved ones will develop and grow as they pursue their uStep goals.

Our motto is treat a person as they are and they will remain as they are. Treat a person as they could be and they become as they should be. Isolation isn’t the answer to helping vulnerable people; Enablement, support and care is and that’s what uStep does for the people it serves and their families
