We’ve reached the 14th Day of ubu’s Christmas Festivities! As our Christmas room filled today with guests, the excitement of the festivities was getting everyone very merry and ready for celebrating the big event next week. People we serve travelled from Scarborough, Leeds and the Harrogate area to enjoy a fun-filled event organized by our elves. Today’s seasonal game was “The Christmas Wrap”. We wondered what that could mean and we soon found out as jolly rolls of paper and glowing ribbons appeared. The game was to ‘wrap-up’ four elf volunteers so that they ended up looking like oversized presents. It was a game which gave everyone a chance to take part and much amusement was had by all.
There was, as there has been on each day of our festivities, energetic dancing and heart-felt singing to our favourite Christmas songs. We never seem to tire of joining in with the choruses of these happy songs and several of our guests took the opportunity to entertain and encourage us by leading the singing. Our Song of the Day was “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time At All?” which was first recorded in the 1980’s by Band Aid. They organised fund-raising concerts for people starving in Africa and the song has become a reminder each year since of the needs of other people.
Our nominated charity today was for a young man called Cameron Harper. People we serve in Leeds have been touched by Cameron’s story and ubu is proud to support Cameron’s ‘Just Giving’ fund-raising page with a donation of 50. Cameron was born prematurely and was very poorly as a baby. He has a form of cerebral palsy which means he has huge difficulty in walking and using his hands. But Cameron has been determined to overcome his difficulties. He says “I have one wish and that’s to walk and become as independent as possible. One day my dream will come true!” We have all found his story truly inspiring.
Warm drinks and a selection of Christmas cakes from all around the world were served by the elves. As our guests began to leave for home we started to think about our 15th Day of Christmas Festivities which we will be celebrating next Monday. Come then back to find out what an amazing event the elves have planned. It’s bound to be spectacular!
