A thick fog enveloped us today on the 12th Day of ubu’s Christmas festivities but nothing was going to stop the people we serve from enjoying and celebrating together. It was wonderful to see old friends and catch up with their news, their successes and the giant steps they have taken towards greater independence this year. Clare came over from Leeds along with friends from all around the city. Clare said “I’m so excited to be here, I’ve had an amazing year”.
The event today was led by the people we serve who stepped up to ensure that everyone had a chance to take part; to sing out proudly and to show off their best dance moves. Our song today was “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” which helped to get everyone in the mood for warm mince pies and hot drinks served by the elves.
Red and white ‘candy canes’ had been hidden around the beautiful decorations in our Christmas room which everyone enjoyed hunting and collecting to share with people who couldn’t come today. The elves had also arranged a funny I’m A Celebrity ‘bushwacker trial’. We took turns in trying to work out what was in a closed box, feeling about and trying to guess the contents. There was slimy custard in one and then furry worms in another! Fortunately there was nothing really horrible in the boxes and the game made us all laugh out loud together.
Our Charity of the Day was nominated by the people we serve in Newcastle. We are proud to support Mental Health Matters with a donation of £50. They support people to build personal confidence, to recover self-esteem, learn new skills and build lasting friendships with others. These are all goals we strive to achieve in ubu. We are certain that everyone should expect to be treated with respect and to find their rightful place in their community. ubu believes that by treating people as they could be they will become who they should be.
As our celebration drew to a close, June from Harrogate took to the floor to confidently sing and dance in the style of Cher. Her performance of “The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)” was quite extraordinary and applauded by all the elves and our guests. “This is how to really party!” said June as she came to the end of her showcase performance. Then we waved goodbye to our guests, the elves were already wondering what could make tomorrow’s festivities even better, so come back then and enjoy sharing it with us.
