Today had something to give cheer to all the people we serve who came to Harrogate for our 11th day of Christmas festivities. The ubu elves had organised a competition to build a snowperson. Our guests were asked to race to fill in rather blank snowman with jolly carrot noses, eyes, hats and buttons. We were also visited by a live snowman who danced along with everyone. James from Harrogate really enjoyed singing along with our karaoke microphone. He’s recently succeeded in winning third place in a ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ contest at a local Arts and Crafts Centre.
Colin was obviously happy, swaying from side to side to the beat of the music. Christopher made the journey and clapped and grinned gleefully as the music lifted our guests from their seats in merriment. Helen was delighted when the tasty Yorkshire puddings were served with vegetarian ‘Quorn’ turkey slices and gravy by the ubu elves.
Our charity donation of £50 had been presented to St Michael’s Hospice recently by Caroline from Knaresbrorough. Despite having a bit of a cold, she made sure she was able to get to our Christmas event today to watch a short video which was shown about St Michael’s Hospice.
The Hospice provides care and support to people facing a terminal illness in the area. It’s a charity that many of the people we serve have supported over the last few years either by working as volunteers in their charity shops or by helping to raise money at many of their fund-raising events.
Our festivities continued with a very enjoyable sing-along to popular Christmas tunes. Our King of the Elves was losing his voice today and so supported by Deborah, one of our guests, they held up cue cards saying things like “Sing Louder” and “Applause”. We sang a round of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” with great enthusiasm and we made a lot of happy noise. Perhaps we could even be heard as far as the North Pole!
