The sport relief mile aims to “bring the entire nation together to get active, raise cash and change lives”, with this in mind, a number of people who ubu support decided to join in and run the mile! To get an idea of what the race was like, we asked some of the runners to describe how their days went...
Carlena explained that: “I felt excited about the crowd and I met Dick and Dom after the race. I had my picture taken with them, we also met Gareth Gates. People were dressed in costumes whichmade me laugh. I had a picture with a green chicken. We did warm up exercises then we got in line to race. We did the one mile race and it was really great to see the finishing line. Suzie and I won a medal each. We had our picture taken by Christine and also got a bottle of water. I can’t wait till the next race, the race was tiring and the people we met were very tired. We ended the day with a BBQ and then were ready for our beds!”
Carlena “Hi, we are Rebecca, Yvonne, Matthew and Becky, we live in York. On Sunday 25th March 2012 we did the sport relief mile with our enablers.
The day was really sunny and warm and it was great to dress up in our ubu T-shirts, there were lots of people there who were all ready for the race. We registered and got our numbers, even one for Philosophy a ubu mascot. We lined up at the start of the race and set off. Lots of the people were racing so they set off running, while we all walked around. Rebecca who uses a wheelchair was supported to walk for some of the race and was able to walk across the finish line. At the end of the course was a large crowd and all cheered as each of us crossed the line. We all had a great day and lots of our families came to cheer us on. With the help of our friends and family and people from the local community we raised nearly £300 which was fantastic.
The day was great and lots of people in York have recognised us from the walk and have stopped to say “hello”.
Thank you to all who supported us, Rebecca, Yvonne, Matthew and Becky.
