I never thought I would get the chance to go backstage at a major musical but thanks to the incredible generosity of the world famous dance choreographer Arlene Philips a few very lucky tenants and staff from ubu did just that!
The show was Starlight Express; the venue Blackpool opera house, as the stellar futuristic show rolled into town as part of a countrywide tour. This particular version of the show is a new vision with stunning staging and choreography by Arlene which even involves the use of 3D glasses to immerse the audience further into the production.
Having heard that a few people supported by ubu were keen to see this re-imagined staging of such a classic show, Arlene arranged for us to be given a number of special tickets which included a meeting with the performers!
From the moment we excitedly entered the theatre we were totally giddy. Seeing a musical is always special but to know we had the VIP treatment ready and waiting for us was something else entirely.
Let me just say that it was incredible! One of the best shows I have ever seen and it was great to see how much enjoyment everyone else got out of it. We all laughed at each other when we put on our 3D glasses because of how silly they made us look, but the effect they produced was fantastic. To see all the smiling faces, singing and clapping along was the best feeling, and having co-ordinated our travel plans and time schedule, I knew I’d played a part in the event coming together.
Then came the real VIP moment; after the show we got to go backstage! This was my first experience of being backstage, as it was for the others that came, and so this made it even more special. We met all the cast members, including the leads, and they were all nice enough to spend some time with us talking about the show and having photos taken (as you can see).
After we left the theatre that night I asked some of our party what they thought to the night and was told; “I loved it…the best time of my life” and “I want to go to more shows, they are fantastic”. Then the next morning the others told me “I couldn’t sleep when I got home I was so excited” and “I loved the show and meeting the people. Both were the best things ever”!
It was a really special day for all that were lucky enough to attend and we can’t thank Arlene enough for making it possible for us to have this once in a lifetime experience.
