SCHOOL’S out and that mean a summer of family fun as people head off on their holidays.
We at ubu have always encouraged the people we support to get out, get active, and explore new places. For many, a summer holiday overseas is very popular.
Accommodating wheelchairs and finding hotels that cater to people with special needs has been challenging. But today, as attitudes change and demand increases, that happens less and less. However, there are some areas that can still be problematic.
People with Autism, or other mental health conditions, often find travel - particularly air travel - challenging. Airports can be very busy environments, and airplanes can make them feel hemmed in. For them and their families, overseas travel used to mean extra planning and extra costs to accommodate their needs. Now, thanks to some clever travel insurance companies the headache has been reduced with a wide array of policies and products. More than 50 insurance companies in the UK have come to understand that people with Autism want and deserve a holiday like everyone else, and so they have created some policies that will make any travel anywhere easier.
You may recently have heard the case of an American family who recently boarded a plane with their adult daughter who is autistic. Her particular concern is that all her food is piping hot. The family had packed her a meal but it wasn’t warm enough so they asked the crew to warm it up. Because they were not travelling first class the crew refused. Their daughter became agitated and the pilot decided to make an unplanned landing, where the family was removed from the flight. The airline passed on the additional landing costs to the family who had no insurance. It cost a fortune.
ubu have investigated a few of the policies called ‘insurance for pre-existing medical conditions’ and found that many will cover most eventualities from having to be flown home early to needing specialist care while overseas.
An internet search will quickly and easily find a number of options, ranging from specialist companies to well-known high street brands.
Of course, most families plan well in advance and are experienced at ensuring things go as smoothly as they possibly can. Now thanks to more than 50 insurance companies they can go even smoother and they can be guaranteed a worry-free holiday.
Happy holidays and follow updates from our intrepid travellers @ubusupport.
