Two years ago Peter was asked by ubu enablers “What do you want to achieve in your life?”
Peter talked about lots of things like going on holiday abroad somewhere, learning how to play the guitar but most of all he talked about moving into his own independent flat.
ubu listened and then worked with Peter to help him realise his dreams. Peter has been on holiday abroad now. He has guitar lessons every week where he has learnt to play numerous rocked up versions of his favourite tunes. Both of these successes have given him enormous pleasure.
His biggest achievement has been working to learn new independent living skills so that he can move into his own flat. At the beginning of March, Peter visited a newly opened ubu support in Knaresborough, to take a look around. Peter was really impressed by the quality and standard of the apartment and loved having the opportunity to meet other people who currently live there, the enabling team who work there to support individuals to live independently. Peter found it a very positive and inspiring experience and has talked about little else since.
ubu offers the people we serve the opportunity to live independently in their own homes with the minimum of intrusion into their lives. This is a way of living that Peter has wanted for some time, feeling that he has been empowered to make choices for himself.
Peter will be moving into his new apartment soon and is really excited about it. He is enthusiastic about sharing how good he feels about this move with other people. He says that until now he could never have believed he would ever have his own place; but, as another one of his dreams is about to be achieved, when we asked him how his dreams came true he simply says ‘people believed in me, then they helped me make it happen’.
