We’re are a group of people who live independently enabled by ubu teams in North Tyneside. We are all fond of a good party and generally getting together for a fun time!
After the success of our Comic Relief fundraising efforts earlier this year, we realised how much we can achieve when we all work together as one team. So to celebrate the beginning of Summer we decided to have a Hawaiian themed disco and party - also known as a ‘Luau’.
We wanted to share the fun not just with our families and friends, but also with people we know who receive care support from other service providers. So we decided to put up posters, send out email invitations made some telephone calls and spread the word to our neighbours and friends.
We thought it would be great to raise some funds to cover costs of food and materials so we asked people to donate to the event. Then we all worked together as one smooth operating team to hold our Hawaiian luau party. We all worked together and decided on who should take responsibility for each of different preparation tasks, such as sourcing tombola and raffle prizes, creating bespoke colourful Hawaiian themed decorations, and preparing a delicious and plentiful buffet with many varieties of food!
On the day we all wore our Hawaiian themed outfits and were joined by all the people we had invited from our community. We gave everyone a ‘Lei’ (a beautiful flower garland) as they came in through the door and it wasn't long before people were strutting their stuff on the dance floor! They tried their luck on the raffle and tombola, savouring the delights of the bountiful buffet, or posing for funny photos with party props in our homemade photo booth.
Emily and Alison from Newcastle and their ubu enabling team also treated all the guests to a hula dance that they had practiced especially for the party. All in all, the event was a fantastic success, everyone had a wonderful time, we made lots of new friends and enjoyed meeting up with old ones too. As the party came to a close, our guests left with big smiles on their faces and asking when we plan to have our next party. Roll on Halloween!
