Since 2002 Sally has transformed her life and gained a huge amount of independence.
In the early days Sally required help with things on a daily basis, including skills and activities like being out in the community, and general household tasks such as cleaning and cooking. But being a fiercely driven person Sally wanted to learn to undertake these tasks on her own, and set consistent goals for herself.
This started with cooking; something which she was particularly interested in. Basic skills were learnt at first but it wasn’t long before she was cooking her own meals without the need of any assistance. Using this achievement as a springboard for greater things she went out in the community looking for voluntary work, which she soon found at a local resource centre. Here she worked as a ‘Meeter and Greeter’, whilst also undertaking general office tasks. She planned her own route to and from work and also travelled independently to the office each day.
Her role at work inspired her to do as much as possible by herself and soon she progressed to doing her own shopping, arranging her own activities and organising trips into town in her free time.
With her confidence now at an all-time high Sally expressed that she wanted to move into a home of her own, and set a target of achieving this goal by the age of 30. She put a folder together of how she would decorate it; including furniture and themes for each room.
Facing some initial difficulties regarding this decision (in terms of whether it would be viable) Sally arranged to attend college courses about staying safe and general Health & Safety, to prove she could look after herself. At this time she also took on a new voluntary role as a classroom assistant in a local school. All of this was arranged by Sally, independently.
To add to the above she started to stay at home alone for longer periods of time to show that she had the skills to live in, and maintain her own place. This addressed some concerns her family members had, which in turn gave her the chance to advocate her own dreams.
Following this an opportunity arose for Sally to move into her own two bedroom house with her best friend, which she was thrilled about. At the age of 29, 1 year before her 30th birthday she achieved her biggest goal and moved into her own place!
She now lives a full lifestyle, including work, Zumba classes, the gym, socialising and college courses. This has all been arranged by Sally, and as with all aspects of her life, has been done her way, with a lot of hard work and determination.
