How we will put people at the heart of their communities giving them greater independence

20th January 2015

ubu has always been a ground-breaking organization, focusing very clearly on developing independent living for the people we serve.

2014 saw more new uStep openings, the people we serve were more visible at the heart of their local communities and we invested heavily in training to develop Enablers – the people who really understand how and what our consumers want to achieve.

This year will be no different, but we are going to crank things up a gear! ubu are making a firm commitment in 2015 to work even harder at overcoming the stigma for the people we support and many other vulnerable people experience.

The uStep model of supported living was built around the principles of community inclusion and independence, and that every member of society can make valuable contributions. Our end-of-year Flashmobs demonstrated this and the way that the people we serve can make a difference.  Not only did they shine a light during a stressful time for many people but they also helped raise money for their favourite charities.  This year there will be more of that, with the people we serve playing even more diverse and active roles in their communities. This will involve continuing to find new opportunities for community work and volunteering in a multitude of capacities.

We are also determined to change the way that society views and treats vulnerable adults by working to end stigma and prejudice in every walk of life be that social, occupational, health, or equal access and living opportunities.
