Christmas is nearly upon us. Decorations are already going up in homes and fairy lights are twinkling across cities all over the country.
The festive period is a time that brings families and communities together, and this is certainly true at ubu, but this year Christmas will also be a celebration of independence.
For two of our customers this Christmas will be even more exciting than usual, as this will be their first Christmas living independently in their very own flats.
Dive down to the next level to read about how Glyn and Carlena are looking forward to their first independent Christmas.
“So I’m finally taking the plunge. I’m taking the next great step forward in my life by moving into my own flat.
I take this step with nothing but courage and excitement, knowing that I will now have my own space, all my own things and my privacy whenever I want it. I have been involved in the planning process for some time now. ubu have supported me to make a plan for decoration as well as transitioning to living on my own, which has been great.
I have spent a lot of time recently in the area I am moving to. I have visited my new flat, got to know the local shops and really been able to find my feet so that when the big move comes around I won’t be a stranger.
All of this positivity has inspired me and I am now making plans to take on additional leisure activities. I am looking to join a local swimming club with support. This is the next great chapter in my life and I couldn’t be happier!”
These fantastic stories are evidence that with determination and support anything is possible. Getting the things we want most is always an incredible feeling, but at Christmas time the achievement is all the sweeter!
If you have any stories about achieving your dreams, gaining more independence or just have some stories and thoughts about Christmas then please let us know.
“The last couple of months have been really exciting for me as I have finally made the step to living in my own apartment; my own place, with my own key, where I don’t have to share with others.
I have chosen all my own furniture and everything that I need to set up my first home. Importantly, I have made connections in my local community and have a great many new friends.
Having previously lived in a residential home environment for 15 years, this will be the first time I have been able to plan how I want MY Christmas to be, instead of going along with other people’s plans.
I can choose who I see and who I invite to my new home. I have already been out and bought my first Christmas tree and decorated it how I want it to look. I am really proud of my achievements to date and I am looking forward to the New Year, as I continue on the journey of the next great chapter in my life.
I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas! And to anyone who is thinking about taking the next step to getting your own place, GO FOR IT! It is certainly the best decision I have made.”
So Glyn is getting the thing he wanted most this Christmas, but he’s not the only one. Swim on to find out about the next great chapter in Carlena’s life.
