Colour Run fund-raising success

11th August 2016

Kelly, our Regional Development Manager for North Yorkshire has been raising money for a charity that personally means an enormous amount to her. TOFS is a organisation that provides support to families with children who are born unable to swallow. It is a very rare, little known condition that is very challenging for children born with Tracheo-Oesophageal Fistula, Oesophageal Atresia and associated conditions and their for their families.

TOFS was set up to offer one-to-one support from parents and relatives with experience of caring for a child with the problem. They hold social events and activities and they maintain an on-line community where people can share their experiences. TOFS also publish information leaflets and provide many other resources to new parents, families, adults with the condition and to health professionals.

Kelly has been fundraising in a variety of ways for some time now. As part of her fundraising effort, she recently took part in a Colour Obstacle Run event in Leeds.

“I'm feeling so proud of myself for not only raising money for a cause very close to my heart but for completing a 5k jog around a very eventful course”. Kelly had to work hard to get herself fit and ready for the challenge, but it was definitely worth it.

“Even though I sustained bruises, a few minor cuts and was covered in colourful paint, I loved running the course and clambering over some incredible obstacles. I had an amazing experience!”

Kelly was honest about how difficult it was to complete the course. “It was hard, I am not going to lie, especially climbing up several large inflatables with a rope, when very slippery and totally wet.”

Many of Kelly’s friends came along to give her all the encouragement she needed. “I got to the top of one of the particularly difficult obstacles, a huge slide, with my friends shouting up to me “You can do it”. Sometimes I would lose my grip and slide back down to the bottom but then people would be call out “Come on Kelly, we're here for you!”

Reflecting on the experience Kelly said “It really helped having their support and it made me realise just how important enthusiasm can be when I’m encouraging the people we serve in ubu to achieve new goals.”

Kelly has raised over £520 for TOFS. “I want to thank each and every one of the people who sponsored me. It’s amazing, with everyone’s help I’ve actually exceeded my target. It was so much fun too, I laughed and laughed, rolling about in the mud and being pelted with colourful paint. It was all worth doing for such a special cause.”
