Caring for others

6th August 2013

Volunteer work is something I really enjoy. It is something that provides a gateway to many other activities for me as it provides me with a great deal of motivation and fulfilment. As such I am always keen to explore as many volunteering opportunities as possible.

I have had roles that involve cleaning, organising things and even helping out with horse riding at a local stables. But I decided that I wanted to become involved with something that would allow me to help others directly as I love caring for people.

So with help from ubu I was able to contact the local Age Concern. When I told them of my great passion for people they asked me to attend an interview; at which I was successful in being offered a volunteer position.

I volunteer every Tuesday and my role sees me really making a difference to the lives of others. I help with preparing meals and making cups of tea which I know are making people happy, and that makes me feel fantastic.

I have really hit it off with my colleagues and many times after a shift we all sit down together to have a chat, a coffee and a piece of cake.

The fulfilment provided by this role has given me the zest for more, and since starting at Age Concern I have also joined a ballet class and begun swimming twice a week.

My next goal is to go to college to study literacy and numeracy; two huge accolades that will further my journey on the road to independence.
