A voice at last!

1st July 2015

Ben is a fun-loving young man who interacts non-verbally and lives independently enabled by ubu. Fortunately, Ben is able to understand most of what is said to him but until recently he was using two just two simple Makaton sign language symbols to indicate the words "yes" and "no".

Then Ben’s ubu enabling team found a very promising application for his iPad. The ‘app’ makes it easy for Ben to produce short sentences and ask for what he wants. By typing directly onto his iPad, it can ‘speak’ electronically for him. With this relatively simple but very sophisticated tool, Ben can let people know what he really needs. It provides a brilliant way for Ben to let people know what he interested in and the choices he wants to make.

Now that Ben has been using the text to speech app on his iPad for a while it has given him a powerful way to communicate with other people which he is becoming really comfortable with.  Ben’s confidence has grown and his frustrations around communication have begun to melt away.

Now Ben has begun using more sign language and combined with his innovative use of assistive technology, he is able to express himself effectively and have a voice at last.

A voice at last! A voice at last!
