2013 is a year that will see significant changes that will have a considerable impact on our organisation.
Firstly, there are significant changes on the subject of benefits. For those of you that don’t know already, Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is being replaced by a new benefit called Personal Independence Payment (PIP) between April 2013 and October 2017. As an organisation our vision is to ‘enable citizenship by transforming people's lives with minimal support.’ To do this we have to understand the sometimes complicated world of benefits to enable us to offer the most effective financial support. - We will shortly be introducing a benefits guide which will allow all ubu staff to do this. In the meantime, anyone who has any concerns should contact Financial Support at the Hub and we will assist you with any questions that you may have.
Another external change that will affect us later this year is on the subject of pensions. Some of you may have seen the television advert talking about workplace pensions and auto enrolment. You might be concerned or some of you may have simply ‘switched off’ as let’s face it - pensions is not the most exciting subject! – Either way over the coming months you’ll all learn about this new law and understand how it will impact you as our organisation prepares for this change.
Then there’s the internal changes that are taking place…
Despite the economic climate, ubu continues to grow - developing and opening new ustep models which are highly sought after, the latest of which was Sovereign Mill in Leeds. More uStep models are planned to open later this year – offering more fantastic opportunities for the people we support.
And finally there is the internal re-structure which is now well under way. My view is the whole process will achieve engagement from the workforce, which will ultimately improve the quality of support that we offer – surely that makes it all worthwhile?
Change sometimes has a bad reputation but not in my view — not by any means. In fact, change is necessary in life — to keep us moving ... to keep us growing ... to keep us interested. Imagine life without change. It would be static and frankly boring so with all the changes that are facing us over the coming months I’m looking forward to an exciting year ahead!
